MicroMuse

"MicroMUSE" is a MUD started in the 1990s. It is based on the TinyMUSE system, which allows members to interact in a virtual environment called Cyberion City, as well as to create objects to modify their environment. Like most other MUDs, MicroMUSE was conceived as an environment to allow people in far-flung locations to interact with each other and enhance the educational experience. Students with internet access, particularly college and university students, also use MicroMUSE as a social environment to interact with others across the world. They also served as a precursor for commercially popular MMORPGs. Like many similar MUDs of that era, a core group of users remain active.

MicroMUSE is based on an optimistic vision of the 24th century. The virtual world of Cyberion City II is described as a gigantic, cylindrical city in orbit around the Earth, 36 kilometers long and 15 kilometers in diameter. Cyberion's residents are scholars who lived in a unique community dedicated to learning, teaching, and the preservation of knowledge. Dr. Barry Kort was instrumental in setting up MicroMUSE with assistance from Kevin Kane ("Frnkzk"). MicroMUSE / MuseNet received the 1996 NII Award for pioneering innovations in Children's Education via the Internet. [ [http://underground.musenet.org:8080/~bkort/nii.award.html Transcript of The Award letter and Certificate] ]

The MicroMUSE Charter and Bylaws (1994) define the history, goals and purposes of MicroMUSE.
