Five cities submitted bids to host the 1998 Winter Olympics (formally known as "XVIII Olympic Winter Games"), which were awarded to Nagano, on June 15, 1991. The other candidate cities were Salt Lake City, Östersund, Jaca and Aosta. Nagano was the leading city in every round in which they participated.
