Roman K. Kovalev is an
assistant professor of history at the College of New Jersey where he teaches classes on Russian history and culture as well as seminars focused on his more specific areas of study. He holds aPhD in history from theUniversity of Minnesota . His writings have focused on earlyRussian history and archaeology, theScythians ,Cimmerians ,Huns ,Khazars ,Pechenegs ,Oghuz , andKipchaks .Kovalev has authored some of the most up to date and comprehensive analsyses of the economic history of the
Pontic steppe , including theScandinavia n-Middle East ern trade routes and the rise of theKievan Rus .In 2005, Kovalev wrote the first detailed analysis of
Khazar coins discovered in the Spillings horde and at other dig sites. He formulated the hypothesis that these coins, which were struck in imitation ofCaliphate dirhem s and bore the inscription "Moses is the Prophet of God", were intended to commemorate the conversion of the Khazar kingdom toJudaism , an event which Kovalev (and now other Khazar researchers, includingKevin A.
