Selwood was recruited from Bendigo Pioneers as the
West Coast Eagles ' third pick, and number 53 overall in the2002 AFL Draft . In 2003, his debut season, Selwood played two games including the losing elimination final against Adelaide. He played three games in 2004 beforeosteitis pubis curtailed his season.In 2005, Selwood played 21 matches and received a rising star nomination in round 16. He was knocked unconscious in a collision with Adelaide captain
Mark Ricciuto in round 22 but the forced layoff helped Selwood to recover fromcompartment syndrome . He returned in the preliminary final against Adelaide and played in the grand final against Sydney, which the Eagles lost by four points. He was however lucky enough to take out the under 18 premiership for his home club Sandhurst. It was held out at Cal Gully oval where him and fellow team mate Zac Perez were able to play in the GF replay after previous draw and were the difference winning by around 8 goals. Ben Dyett was Coach. Moses Blanks was the emotional captain.2006 saw him cement his place in the Eagles' starting 22, and build a reputation as a defensive midfielder. Selwood played in all of the 26 games for West Coast in 2006. He capped off the year by finishing fifth in the West Coast Eagles Club Champion award. He has many different nicnames over his journey which include Gomez, Gloria, ,Ardam, Milky Thistle, Dyno, Damien, Gig and Larry Bird jnr.
2007 Round 3 controversy
On 14 April 2007, Selwood was involved in an altercation with Fremantle's
Des Headland . Both appeared before theAFL Tribunal on 18 April. Headland was charged with two counts of striking Selwood, and one count of wrestling with him, while Selwood was charged with using insulting language towards Headland. On 18 April, the tribunal found Selwood not guilty of using insulting language. In 2008, Selwood has enjoyed his best season to date playing more as a defensive tagger. His consistency is also highlighted, being 1 of only 4 West Coast players to play all games up to round 17. Selwood averages 18 possessions a game from the first 17 Rounds.

Selwood has a twin brother,
Troy Selwood , who plays for theBrisbane Lions , and two younger brothers,Joel Selwood , who plays for theGeelong Cats andScott Selwood , who was drafted to play at theWest Coast Eagles .
