It has an area of 5007.75 square kilometers and a population of 1,380,000 as of 2003. Liuyang shares an important place in the history of the origination of fireworks. These "flowers" as the Chinese name implies (literally Fire Flower) are not just appreciated by Chinese but have also been appreciated by people from numerous countries and cultures.

The Liuyang river is the main irrigation system in Liuyang. There is also a very famous song named "Liuyanghe ", the theme of which relates to Chairman Mao and is a Karaoke favorite in the town.

Chrysanthemum stones are another famous item. They are available in many sizes and can range in price of less than a dollar, to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
