college preparatory ,inter-district public magnet high school based inStamford, Connecticut . AITE serves the communities of Stamford, Darien, Greenwich, Norwalk, New Canaan, Ridgefield and Wilton, all of which are located in Connecticut. AITE is engaged in educational reform. It has alaptop initiative that distributes aHP Tablet PC to everystudent in theschool and utilizes ablock schedule with 88-minute periods.History
AITE was established in 1999, operating as the Academy of Information Technology (AIT). In 2005, the name of the school was appended and became the Academy of Information Technology and Engineering, in order to reflect the concentrations on
engineering -related courses in addition to thetechnology -related courses already offered. AITE is currently located on the Rippowam Campus and originally shared a building withRippowam Middle School before moving into its own home behind Rippowam Middle School in September 2007.Facilities
AITE moved into their new
school building in September 2007. The new building is located behind Rippowam Middle School. Eachclassroom has a uniquedesign , as there arewindow s for eachclassroom andoffice that look into thehallway as well asoutdoors . The building consists of three stories, with an atrium in the middle, containing a grand stairwell and glass elevator. Each classroom has an
LCD projector , aHP Tablet PC docking station , twopodium s (one forfaculty use and one forstudent use), adocument camera , aDVD /VCR player and asound system. The building was
designed byFuller & D'Angelo Associates , who arearchitects located inElmsford, NY . TheCity of Stamford 's Engineering Department oversaw theproject .eChalk
In 2002, AITE introduced a new online
content management system for use by itsstudents ,faculty ,staff andadministrators in partnership witheChalk . This system allows itsusers topost andview assignments forclasses and supports groups for school basedorganizations ; it also provides anelectronic mail account for all users.Tablet PC Program
In 2005, AITE launched their
Tablet PC initiative. The program aimed todistribute tablet PC s to allstudents ,faculty ,staff andadministrators , in order to provide a better and more convenient resource foreducational activities . Thetablets were intended to be used both athome and inschool where they can use the school'swireless information technology infrastructure . The school uses apaperless system, allowing students, faculty, staff and administrators tocommunicate andcollaborate throughelectronic means though there are printers in each classroom.AITE's current contract with HP ends in 2009, and they hope to upgrade to better computer. The current TC4400 tablet PC's lack the power and speed required for some of the programs installed. Many believe that the computers are over restricted, and don't allow for easy use of the system.
