The Thomas Wedge Church of England Junior School is in Saughall, Cheshire. It was built and endowed by Thomas Wedge of Sealand, Flintshire at his own expense in 1852 as a gift to the people of Saughall and Sealand. The school was originally known as Great Saughall School.
Headmasters
The first headmaster was Joseph Williams who stayed in his role for 47 years and retired in 1899 after writing an open letter to his pupils explaining some of the challenges that he had faced in his role. His son, James Hyatt Williams, worked unpaid in the school and took the role of acting headmaster until his replacement in February 1900 by Mr Duckworth. Mr Duckworth later left the school to join the ministry.
In 1919 came Mr Sloing Matthews who placed strong emphasis on music and artistry. Saughall had always excelled in choral music, the village choir in 1919 was famous over the North West. In 1926 the Thomas Wedge Choir gained full marks in the Wallasey Festival. In 1942 came Mr Davies who stayed at the school until his retirement 1962. During his time at the school the population increased significantly and the overspill was taught in temporary buildings and in the Vernon Institute. The temporary buildings were eventually replaced with a permanent extension in 2004.
An RAF pilot, Duncan Clarke, was appointed as deputy head of Thomas Wedge School in 1955 and on Mr Davies' retirement became headmaster. He was a very popular and respected member of the community and stayed as head for 15 years.
Proposed Schools merger in 2009
In late 2006 Cheshire County Council agreed to embark on a process which would ultimately lead to the merger of both The Ridings County Infant School and the Thomas Wedge Church of England Junior School.
In March 2008 the plans were submitted and include building an entirely new united Primary school on the school field behind where the current Thomas Wedge building stands. Once this is complete the original 1852 school and all later parts (including the 2004 build) will be demolished to make room for green space and a staff car park. The name of the school is likely to be changed to Saughall Primary School.
