Carlos Gracie (1901-1994) is the co-founder of
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu theBrazil ianmartial art ofBrazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) along with his younger brotherHélio Gracie . Carlos Gracie died in 1994 at the age of 92.Judo and BJJ
He was taught
judo by Otávio Mitsuyo Maeda, aJapan ese emigrant to Brazil who was then a 4th danKodokan judoka. Carlos then passed the teachings on to his brothers Gastão Jr., Jorge and Hélio. In 1925, the brothers opened their first academy in Brazil, marking the beginning of the art ofBrazilian Jiu-Jitsu .Family
Carlos had 21 children, 12 of whom earned the rank of black belt in Gracie Jiu-jitsu. They are:
