- St James's Street
St James's Street is one of the principal streets in the central
London district ofSt James's . It runs fromPiccadilly downhill toSt James's Palace andPall Mall . The main gatehouse of the palace is at the southern end of the road, and in the 17th centuryClarendon House faced down the street across Piccadilly, located whereAlbemarle Street is now situated.St James's Street was built up without an over-all plan ["In scattered fashion",
Nikolaus Pevsner remarked, "London" vol. I (Buildings of England), 2nd ed. 1962:590.] but received a boost with Lord St Albans' planned construction ofSt James's Square . Today St James's Street contains several of London's best known gentlemen's clubs, such asBrooks's , [In premises byHenry Holland , 1777-78 (Pevsner 1962).] theDevonshire Club , originally Crockford's [In premises by Benjamin and Philip Wyatt, 1827, containing the first Neo-Rococo features in the conservative context of a London club; altered by C. J. Phipps, 1870-75. (Pevsner 1962)] theCarlton Club andWhite's , some exclusive shops and various offices. A series of small side streets on its western side lead to some extremely expensive properties overlookingGreen Park , includingSpencer House and theRoyal Over-Seas League at the end of Park Place. Two eighteenth-century yards survive behind the noble frontages and giant orders of columns or pilasters of the street. One is Blue Ball Yard, with stables built in 1742. The other is Pickering Place, with four informal Georgian brick houses of 1731. [Pevsner 1962.]Jermyn Street leads off St James's Street to the east. The nearest tube station isGreen Park tube station to the west on Piccadilly.See also
