Richard Bulkeley (d. 1621)
- Richard Bulkeley (d. 1621)
Sir Richard Bulkeley of Beaumaris, Anglesey and Lewisham (died 1621) was an English parliamentarian in the Elizabethan era. He was the Member of Parliament for Anglesey from 1563, a position he obtained through the influence of his father (Sir Richard Bulkeley of Beaumaris and Anglesey). Little is known about him, but he is known for being a courtier to Queen Elizabeth, including entertaining her in Lewisham — see Honor Oak.
Bulkeley, knighted in 1577, became embroiled in various power struggles in Wales including with the Earl of Leicester and Owen Wood of Rhosmor. Wood accused him of oppresing the townspeople of Beaumaris, and being involved with the Babington plot. Bulkeley was exonerated by the Privy Council on these charges, but was censured in the Star Chamber for molesting Wood.
In 1618, he founded the Bulkeley family seat at Baron Hill. His son, Thomas, was created Viscount Bulkeley in 1644, in recognition of his support for the Royalist cause. Three successive viscounts carried the forename Richard.
Sir Richard Bulkeley's son-in-law was Sir Edwin Sandys (American colonist).
