Xu Rong was originally from the Xuantu province (玄菟郡) of
Youzhou . In the year 190, whenYuan Shao led theCampaign against Dong Zhuo , Xu Rong defeated the forces ofSun Jian andCao Cao , who were part of the alliance to put down Dong Zhuo.When Dong Zhuo was assassinated by
Lü Bu andWang Yun , Xu Rong served Wang Yun in the new government. Afterwards, Li Jue andGuo Si , former generals under Dong Zhuo, led an army and attackedChang'an .
