James Harper Prowse

James Harper Prowse

James Harper Prowse (born: November 3, 1913 Taber, Alberta - died: September 27, 1976), was a politician, barrister and solicitor.

He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for the first time 1944. In 1944 there were 3 members of the armed forces (army, navy, and air force) elected to the Legislature. These three members did not represent a specific constituency but instead spoke for the men and women serving overseas in the Second World War. These 3 representatives had no political affiliation and sat on the opposition side of the House. Prowse was the representative of the Army.

Shortly after his election Prowse took over the leadership of the Alberta Liberal Party and spent many years representing the Edmonton district under the Liberal Party banner.

James Prowse ran in the federal riding of Edmonton West in 1962, and again in 1963 and was defeated both times. He was appointed to the Canadian Senate by Lester B. Pearson in 1967 where he represented Edmonton until his death on September 27, 1976.
