Wörner Gap

Wörner Gap (Sedlovina Wörner se-dlo-vi-'na 'vyor-ner) is a flat saddle extending 3 km in the S-N direction between Friesland Ridge and Bowles Ridge in eastern Livingston Island, Antarctica. The gap separates the glacial catchments of Perunika Glacier to the W and Huron Glacier to the E, the latter flowing 8 km eastwards into Moon Bay. The elevation decreases from 585 m in the S to 541 m in the middle, and 525 m in the N.

A conspicuous landmark in the area is Kuzman Knoll, rising to 620 m some 1.3 km E of Wörner Gap’s midpoint.

Named after the late Secretary General of the Atlantic Alliance Dr. Manfred Wörner (1934-94) in recognition of his contribution to European unity.

Location

The gap is located at coord|62|38|13|S|60|10|57|W| (Visited by field parties from St. Kliment Ohridski and Juan Carlos I base. Rough British mapping in 1968 and Spanish in 1991, Bulgarian mapping in 2005 from the topographic survey Tangra 2004/05).
