Trina (name)

Trina (name)

Trina (pronounced Tree-na and sometimes Treen-nah) is a common female first name of Scandinavian origin. The name is based on the Latin word for "triple", Trena, and is occasionally used in reference to the Trinity.

Despite its Scandinavian origins, Trina is a popular girl's first name in Western countries, such as the United States of America. In the late 1970s, the name was in the top 250 baby names in the USA: it has since fallen slightly in popularity, ranking 530th in the 1990 US Census.

Trina is often used as a shortened version of names such as Katrina and Catrina, and when anglicised, the name translates to Catherine or Katherine.

Related names include Kaarina (Finland), Kalena (Hawaii), Katarzyna (Poland), Katica (Slovenia), Katrine (Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands), and Triinu (Estonia).
