WPYX (PYX 106) is a classic rock radio station licensed to Albany, New York and primarily serving New York's Capital Region, the Adirondacks, and surrounding areas. The station is owned by Clear Channel Communications and broadcasts at 106.5 MHz at 15.5 kilowatts ERP from a non-directional transmitter located from the Helderberg Mountains antenna farm in New Scotland.

Though billed as classic rock, WPYX plays a small amount of currents which puts it on a fringe alongside Album-oriented rock. Regardless of what format the station is filed under, WPYX is one of the longest lasting formats in the Capital District and in October 2005 celebrated its 25th anniversary.

History

The 106.5 frequency signed on in September 1967 as WDKC, operating a beautiful music format. Though with a good signal, it was one of multiple stations doing the format and was sold to the owners of WTRY in 1971 and flipped to an offshoot of WTRY's Top 40 format as WTRY-FM. Though it did well for an FM at the outset, WTRY's owners made nearly no money of its own on the station and in 1973 flipped the station back to beautiful music as WHSH ("WishFM").

WHSH's performance was a combination of its prior formats, falling short in the long run because of established rivals in WROW AM/FM and WHRL. By the late 1970s, WHSH was underpeforming in the ratings while a massive hole for an Album-oriented rock station loomed and seeing an opportunity to keep audience from an in-decline WTRY the station flipped to its current format in 1980.

In 2005, WTRY-FM upgraded to IBOC digital radio alongside the rest of Clear Channel's Albany stations. On August 17, 2006, WPYX began airing an HD2 channel known as "Vinyl Vineyard", an album cuts-based classic rock format that is heard on the HD2 stream of other Clear Channel stations across the United States.
