Sambir ( _uk. Самбір, _pl. Sambor) is a city in the Lviv Oblast, western Ukraine, close to the border with Poland. Serving as the administrative center of the Sambirsky Raion (district), the city itself is also designated as a separate raion within the oblast. It is located at around coord|49|31|0|N|23|11|60|E.

History

Beginning in the 12th century it was a part of the Kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia. In the year 1374 it became part of Poland. It earned the Magdeburg rights of a city in 1390 and was owned by Spytek of Melsztyn.

Between the years of 1772 to 1918 it became part of the Polish lands that were partitioned by Austria-Hungary. In 1919 it became part of the Second Polish Republic until its 1939 annexation by the Soviet Union. From 1941 to 1944 Nazi Germany occupied the town. After it was taken over by the Soviets, it became a town in a Ukrainian SSR. It was home to Sambor air base during the Cold War. It has been part of independent Ukraine since 1991.
