- Theta Delta Beta
The
University of California, Irvine was the birthplace of the underground brotherhood known as Theta Delta Beta (ΘΔΒ). It was founded on the principles of Intellectual Awareness, Social Responsibility, Personal Integrity, and Brotherly Love. The first chapter, Alpha Chapter, was founded at Irvine; subsequent chapters have been founded at California State University, Fullerton (Beta Chapter), Los Angeles (Gamma Chapter), andLong Beach (Delta Chapter).History
In 1990, a group of Filipino college students attending the University of California, Irvine, conceived a new organization. Ostensibly labeled "The Dark Boys" because of their dark skin and Ilocano heritage, they sought a community where brothers could thrive in a kinship guided by the principles of intellectual awareness, social responsibility, personal integrity, and brotherly love. In May of the same year, these seventeen founding fathers united to create The Dark Boys, reclaiming the label as their own. In the spirit of true brotherhood, and in jest, the brothers adopted the first letters of The Dark Boys, TDB, and quasi-translated them into the Greek letters:
Theta , Delta, and Beta, to mimic the traditional Greek system. In
1991 Beta Chapter at CSUF was founded. Gamma Chapter was founded in1994 . Long Beach became Delta Chapter in2002 . Theta Delta Beta cultivates and celebrates the intellectual, imaginative, and humanitarian promise of each brother and sister in a family that seeks to practice mutual respect, embrace diversity, and encourage education.Philanthropies
