Irakere (Yoruba for "vegetation") is a
Cuba n band founded by pianistChucho Valdés in1973 that won theGrammy Award for Best Latin Recording in1980 with its album "Irakere". The original members of the band were Chucho Valdes (piano andconducron ),Paquito D'Rivera (alto saxophone andflute ),Oscar Valdes (percussion and vocals),Carlos Puerto (bass),Carlos Emilio (guitar ),Jorge Varone (trumpet ),Tato Alfonso (percussion) andBernardo Garcia (drums).Its later members included flautistJosé Luis Cortés who later foundedNG La Banda , percussionistAnga Díaz , who later went toFrance ; percussionistFran Padilla , who later moved toSpain ; saxophonistPaquito D'Rivera , who left Irakere and Cuba in 1980 during a tour inSpain before moving to theUnited States ; andtrumpet erArturo Sandoval , who went to the US in1990 .The group used a wide array of percussion instruments like
batá ,abacuá andarará drums, chequerés,erikundi s,maraca s,claves , cencerros,bongó ,tumbadora s, andgüiro .Irakere's song "Anunga Nunga" was featured in the video game . The song has been erroneously titled "Aguanile", even in the Vice City booklet and soundtrack. Other songs of theirs, "Bacalao Con Pan" and "Baila Mi Ritmo" (with
