- Kaiserpfalz
The Kaiserpfalz or Königspfalz (Imperial Palace, literally "king's palace") refers to a number of castles across the
Holy Roman Empire which served as temporary, secondary seats of power for theHoly Roman Emperor in the Early and HighMiddle Ages . It is a German word that is a combination ofKaiser , meaning "emperor", which is derived from "caesar"; andPfalz , meaning "palace", and itself derived from theLatin "palatium", meaning the same (seepalace ). Examples of remaining Imperial palaces can be found in the cities ofGoslar orDüsseldorf-Kaiserswerth .Strictly speaking, their name is not "Kaiserpfalz", that is "imperial palace", because that name ignores the fact that in the medieval time of the Holy Roman Empire, the king of the empire only became emperor after gaining the pope's consent.
The palaces were installed to sustain the emperor and his guests and
cortege . Each was administered by acount palatine , who executed jurisdiction in the emperor's stead.List of the Holy Roman Imperial palaces
