Despite being Flemish, she chose to write and perform songs in the
French language . She has achieved great critical and popular success in both Belgium andFrance . Her musical style varies fromjazz and soul to piano ballads.Her musical idols as a youth were the pop group
ABBA . Her music, while more pop than straightforwardR&B , is notably influenced byMotown andsoul music greats as well as byBurt Bacharach . She graduated in law (her father is a lawyer) at theVrije Universiteit Brussel , but she nevertheless felt more attracted to music, a passion of her mother (apianist ). Her first album, "Sans plus attendre", sold 500,000 copies in Belgium alone (a record). The song "Sensualité " was her breakthrough hit in France. Other hits included "Rester Femme ", "Elle danse seule", "Je t'attends",Manhattan-Kaboul , "Parce que c'est toi", and "I had a dream" (featuring Daan). In1998 , she sang withYoussou N'Dour the official song of the1998 FIFA World Cup during the opening ceremony inParis of the1998 FIFA World Cup . In2006 , Axelle Red received the French order "Ordre des Arts et des Lettres ". In May 2008 she was appointed Doctor Honoris Causa at the Universiteit Hasselt (Hasselt University) for her engagement as an artist and ambassador forUnicef .Discography
