Bengali : বর্ধমান পৌর ঊচ্চ বিদ্যালয়), located at the heart ofBurdwan , a town 95 km north-west ofKolkata , is one of the oldest schools inIndia and one of the best inWest Bengal . The school was established in1883 by the efforts of Bardhaman Municipal Authority. Over the years, the school has produced many brilliant students who rose to great heights in their later lives.The school has a large campus consisting of three two-storied buildings, gardens, a big playground and a cycle stand. It has total capacity of 2230 students along with 49 teachers.
History
In 1855
Maharshi Debendranath Tagore , along withAdi Brahmo Samaj established Brahmo Samaj Boys’ School (later renamed Burdwan English School).Bhagaban Chandra Basu , the then Deputy magistrate of Burdwan and father of SirJagadish Chandra Bose , was one of its founders. After the demise ofMahatab Chandra the Brahma movement in Burdwan became weak for lack of patronage. The school was in dire financial straits. Burdwan Municipality took over the school and Burdwan Municipal School started its journey anew on 1.1.1883.Since then the school has witnessed an array of changes and modifications. Due to lack of its own campus, the school had to move to different places throughout its history. The addresses are as follows:

The school has the following structures:
*The West wing.
*The double-storeyed main building, along with the annexe. This wing houses the office of the headmaster.
*The new primary school block (built about 15 years back).
