History
Founded in 1972, the Spruce Kings originally were a part of the Junior "B" Pacific Northwest Hockey League in the 1975-1976 season. In 1980, the Spruce Kings joined the Tier II Junior "A" Peace Cariboo Junior Hockey League for its inaugural year, winning the inaugural title. From 1980 until 1996, the Kings won 9 league titles. In 1996, the Spruce Kings bought out the rights of the BCHL's New West Outlaws and moved in the Prince George team.
The Prince George Spruce Kings hosted the
Royal Bank Cup in 2007. They lost in an anti-climactic final after surviving a record-setting quintuple overtime match in the semi-final versus theCamrose Kodiaks . Spruce King goalie Jordan White made 91 saves in the 3-2 victory. At 146 minutes, it was the longest game in RBC Royal Bank Cup history.pruce Kings Radio
The Spruce Kings and Prince George’s newest radio station, CFIS-FM, announced August 14,2007 that the Spruce Kings play-by-play broadcasts for all regular season and playoff games will be aired on 93.1 CFIS-FM; they will also be simulcast on the Spruce Kings website and the BCHL Fanzone. Game broadcasts will feature a pre-game show, play-by-play of the game and a post game show. During home games, fans will be able to bring a portable FM radio to the Coliseum and listen to the game broadcast on 93.1 CFIS-FM. Play-by-play of the Spruce Kings broadcasts will be handled by Ron Gallo, Brandan Spyker and the Color commentating will be provided by Aaron Dubois. Ron Gallo has been with the team for the past thirteen seasons in many roles including play-by-play coverage of the team’s road games on the internet during the previous two seasons. Ron Gallo will be provideing play-by-play for all road games as well as hosting the live extended post game show from the Red Robin restaurant following every fome game. Brandan Spyker will be handling the play-by-play for the home games. This will be Spyker's first year at broadcasting. He is looking very forward to starting a career in broadcasting with the Spruce Kings. This will also be Aaron Dubois's first year at broadcasting. He will be supporting Brandan Spyker by steping into the role of color commentator for home games. The play-by-play will begin in the 2007-2008 season.
