- Electoral division of Derwent
The Electoral division of Derwent is one of the fifteen electorates or 'seats' in the Tasmanian Legislative Council. It is situated in the south of the state and is named after the Derwent River.
The divisions current borders were established in 1999 and it has an area of 8,895 km² with 22,760 enrolled voters.
Derwent includes some outer Hobart suburbs such as Bridgewater, Old Beach, Claremont. It also includes many towns such as New Norfolk, Hamilton, Brighton, Pontville, Ouse and Strathgordon.
The current sitting member is Australian Labor Party politician Michael Aird who won the division in 1995 and then again at the 1997, 2003 elections. The next election in the division is expected for 2009. Derwent is one of only four Tasmanian Legislative Council electorates that is not held by an independent.
