Shamkhal (title)

Shamkhal (title)

Shamkhal or Samkhal is the title for the khans of Ghazi-Q’umuq’ and Tarki, Daghestan, during the 12-19th centuries. The Shamkhals dominated most of Daghestan.

Kumyk nationalists cite the Shamkhalate as their inspiration for seeking an independent Kumyk state or Kumyk dominance within Daghestan [Karny, Yoav. "Highlanders:A Journey to the Caucasus in Quest of Memory". New York: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2000.] .
