- Jean-Jacques Lebel
Jean-Jacques Lebel was born in Paris in 1936. He is known primarily for his work as an artist and a writer. He is the son of Robert Lebel, art critic and friend of
Marcel Duchamp . Lebel had his first exhibition in 1955 at Galleria Numero (Florence, Italy). After a brief period of time with Surrealists, Lebel exhibited in Milan and Paris, and then went on to exhibit at various museums and galeries around the world. In 1960, Jean-Jacques Lebel oversaw and partook in the first European Happening (L'enterrement de la Chose, Venice). In 1968, He took part in the activities of "Mouvement du 22-mars," followed by "Noir et Rouge" (an anarchist group), and the Socialist splinter group "Informations et Correspondences Ouvrières." Lebel also followed the philosophical teachings of Gilels Deleuze at "Faculty de Vincennes." Lebel published the first critical essay in French on the Happening movements throughout the world. After this, he produced over seventy Happenings, performances and actions on numerous continents, along with his pictorial, poetic and political work. In the 1960s, Lebel translated and published various work byWilliam Burroughs ,Allen Ginsberg , Michael McClure, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Gregory Corso. In 2001 and 2002 he exhibited "Manifestation Itinérante," "Reliquaire pour un culte de Vénus." He regulary collaborated with artist and writerArnaud Labelle-Rojoux .He continues to work in France today.
