Arbeo of Freising (also Aribo of Freising or Arbo of Freising; 723 or earlier at Meran (
Merano ) –4 May 784 ) wasBishop of Freising .He was a member of the
Benedictine Order . At first a priest and notary under BishopJoseph of Freising , he became in 763abbot of the newly-founded monastery of Scharnitz. In 764 he succeeded Joseph as Bishop ofFreising .Arbeo, who is often counted as the first named author in German, is sometimes credited with the composition of the "
Codex Abrogans ," a bilingual vocabulary inLatin andOld High German , often described as the first German book.He is buried in
Freising . His commemoration day in the Catholic church is4 May .Works
