The government of Mexico implemented
Telesecundaria in1968 to providesecondary education to students in rural areas through open television channel. With the launching of theMorelos II satellite, "Telesecundaria" began transmitting through one of its analog channels. In1994 , "Telesecundaria" began broadcasting in digital format with the advent ofSolidariedad I satellite and since then and that is when Edusat was born and began transmitting on six channels.From
December 1995 to1998 Edusat services migrated toSatmex 5 andDigicipher II by this time signal power was five times what it was during the Morelos II era and the number of channels increased to 10 with a potential of six more and a larger area of coverage. Nowadays, Edusat is received by 35 000set-top box es located in Mexico and 1 000 and other areas of the continent. The technology is responsibility of theSecretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT) andTelecomunicaciones de México (Telecom).ervices
Edusat transmit its own content as well as
Discovery Kids andCanal Cl@se through its channels 21 and 22. The content of four channels is provided by theLatin American Institute of Educational Communication . Although the signal is available in all of the Americas (except for the eastern part ofBrazil ) Edusat services are only offered in Mexico,Central America and certain regions of theUnited States .In addition, several state public television stations, including TV UNAM in
Mexico City and similar university-run television stations, rebroadcast Edusat programming terrestrially.On
November 21 ,2000 theVideoteca Nacional Educativa (VNE, "National Educational Video Library"), the first collection and catalog of audio and visual educational media in Latin America with 100,000 titles.In
2005 , Edusat partnered withCalifornia Distance Learning Health Network (CDLHN) to promote health education in the Americas.ee also
