Woodford United was formed in 1946 upon the resumption of football after
World War II . A previous club, Woodford Central, had existed in the village before the war.United originally played in the Rugby & District League and moved to the Central Northants Combination in 1964. After winning this league in 1966 and 1967 and the league cup in 1966, Woodford moved up to the
United Counties League in 1970.In 1978 Woodford withdrew from the UCL after their ground was sold off by the rail authorities who owned it, forcing them to move to the village recreation ground. They rejoined the Central Northants Combination, where they won the league and cup double in 1990, 1995 and 1998, as well as the title in 1992 and the cup in 1993. In 1998 they were able to rejoin the
United Counties League and won promotion to the Premier Division in 2002.In 2005-06 United clinched the United Counties League title on goal difference and claimed a place in the new Southern League Division One Midlands.
