Wigtownshire in the conservativeSouth of Scotland , he was educated at Britain's most famous school, Eton. From 1971 until 1999 he ran a farm, andas a farmer before his election, he was Conservative spokesman for Agriculture and Forestry in theScottish Parliament . After holding his seat at the 2007 election, on the 14 May he was elected by his fellow MSPs to succeed George Reid as Presiding Officer.
