California's 8th congressional district covers most of the City and County of San Francisco, California, USA, except for the south-western parts of the city that are part of the 12th District.

The 8th district is one of the most reliably Democratic districts in the country, though progressive third parties like the Green Party often poll well in the district. It is geographically the smallest congressional district in the nation outside of New York City. Democrat Nancy Pelosi, the House Minority Leader from 2002 to 2007, and the current Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, has represented the district since 1993, when the area was redistricted from the ushr|California|5|5th district.

Demographics

According to figures from the U.S. Census Bureau, the district is 42.9% white, 28.7% Asian, 15.7% Hispanic and 8.6% black.

The 2000 census also revealed that the 8th district contains the highest number of same-sex couples in the nation. Of 97,305 couples residing in the district, 7,521 (or 7.73%) were same-sex.
