Harold Fredrik Cherniss (1904–
June 18 1987 ) was an expert on thephilosophy ofAncient Greece . He wrote several books in the field, and edited and translated works byPlutarch .Life
Cherniss was born in
St. Joseph, Missouri , and received his doctorate atUniversity of California, Berkeley in 1930. He then taught theGreek language atCornell University , followed by stints atJohns Hopkins University and theUniversity of California .He worked in
military intelligence for theUnited States Army duringWorld War II , then was a faculty member at theInstitute for Advanced Study inPrinceton Township, New Jersey from 1948 until his death in 1987.Publications
