In 2006, the school's
Academic Decathlon team placed first at the Idaho Academic Decathlon State Competition, edging out competitor Centennial High School. The victory marks the first for Sandpoint High School. The team traveled toSan Antonio for the national finals, placing 17th overall and earning the title "Rookie of the Year" for a division II school.The school is also known for its award-winning newspaper, the "Cedar Post." The paper gained national fame when it took home a seventh place honor at the
National Scholastic Press Association 's high school journalism convention inWashington D.C. in 2003. It was the paper's second year under the leadership of adviser Erin Daniels. The following year, the paper received an eighth place award at the same convention inAtlanta . In 2005, the Cedar Post staff traveled toChicago for the same convention. The paper took fourth place, the highest honor it has received to date. The 2006/2007 school year inaugurated a new adviser, Corinne Flowers. After multiple conflicts with the administration, it was announced that Flowers would not be returning as Cedar Post adviser as her contract was not renewed. The 2007-2008 school year will inaugurate yet another adviser, Rick Rhodes.Administrative Changes
The 2005/2006 school year saw the departure of retired lieutenant colonel and principal James Soper. He was replaced by Becky Weller Kiebert, Ph.D., who transferred from within Lake Pend Oreille School District. She was selected by a panel of elected faculty members after a rigorous application process. Also considered but subsequently not hired for the position were current Vice Principals Penny Tenuto, Ph.D. and Rick Dalessio. Tenuto chose to remain as Vice Principal and Dalessio transferred to Lake Pend Oreille Alternative High School as principal, which was Kiebert's last position with the district.
