- John Skylitzes
John Scylitzes or Ioannes Skylitzes (Greek "Ἰωάννης Σκυλίτζης", occasionally "Σκυλίτσης", "fl."
1081 ) was a Byzantine historian of the late11th century .His major work is the "Synopsis of Histories" (polytonic|Σύνοψις Ἱστοριῶν), which covers the reigns of the Byzantine emperors from the death of
Nicephorus I in811 to the deposition ofMichael IV in1057 ; it continues thechronicle of Theophanes Confessor. There is a continuation of this work, known as "Skylitzes Continuatus" covering 1057–1079 , possibly also written by Skylitzes.The Madrid Skylitzes
The most famous manuscript of the Synopsis was produced in
Sicily in the 12th century, and is now at theBiblioteca Nacional de España inMadrid , so is known as the "Madrid Skylitzes ".Bibliography
