WCLZ is a radio station licensed to North Yarmouth, Maine with studios located in Portland. Since 2001 WCLZ has been broadcasting an Adult Alternative format. It operates on FM frequency 98.9 and is under ownership of Saga Communications.

History

The 98.9 Frequency was previously known as WCME (no relation to the current 96.7, with an AM simulcast on 900 (Currently part of The Big JAB with 95.5 and 1440 in Westbrook). The WCLZ call letters were on 98.9 from the mid 1980's until 1999 when WJJB-FM 95.5 inherited the calls (and the adult alternative format) and 98.9 changed call letters to WTPN with a shift to adult contemporary music. The 'CLZ calls, with the adult alternative format would return in 2001, with the 95.5 frequency simulcasting sports programming from AM 1440 and 900. WCLZ was sold to Saga in 2007 after the FCC required previous owner Citadel Broadcasting to sell two Portland stations due to the company's acquisition of ABC Radio [http://news.mainetoday.com/updates/012616.html] . The other station sold was WCYI Lewiston, which for a time simulcasted WCLZ, when held in The Last Bastion Station Trust, LLC, the trust Citadel set up to sell the two Portland stations, as well as several other station across the United States in order to get under the market cap. Several shows from the station moved to WBLM and other Citadel owned stations before being put into the trust and in turn sold to Saga.
