The league was founded in 1908. It has a total of five divisions, with Division One sitting at Step 7 (level 11) of the English football league system. Despite its name, the vast majority of clubs are based in South Oxfordshire. However, many of those Oxfordshire clubs were once in Berkshire before county lines were redrawn in 1974.
The top two clubs in Division One are eligible for promotion to the Hellenic League. For the 2011-12 season, there are 14 clubs competing in Division One.
