Karl Ulrich Schnabel (
6 August 1909 Berlin -27 August 2001 Danbury, CT ) was an Austrianpianist , and the son of pianistArtur Schnabel and operaticcontralto Therese Behr . From 1922–1926 he studied at theHochschule für Musik inBerlin withLeonid Kreutzer andPaul Juon . Although overshadowed by his father's achievement in expressing a new vision of the Classical repertory, Schnabel was still able to develop his own individual style of playing and a poetic insight. He sometimes played for his mother in her recitals and recordings and he is remembered for his imaginative interpretation of the Schubert song cycles. He also made some distinguished recordings of Schubert piano duets with his father. In 1926 he made his recital début in Berlin, gave recitals throughout Europe until leaving for the USA shortly beforeWorld War II . There he married the American pianist,Helen Fogel , with whom he played a large repertory of piano duets. After the war he became active as a recitalist and taught at theDalcroze school inNew York . He became an internationally renowned teacher of the piano. DuringWorld War II he led a laboratory forelectronic music . He published "Modern Technique of the Pedal" (New York, 1950). Later in life he taught numerous master classes atMills College inOakland, California .ources
