Aboriginal All-Stars

Aboriginal All-Stars

The ATSIC Aboriginal All-Stars are an Australian rules football team composed purely of Aboriginals. Many of these players come from clubs in the elite Australian Football League competition. The team was formed to recognise the rich history and talent that indigenous Australians have contributed to the national competition. Approximately one in ten AFL players are Aboriginal. [http://afl.com.au/default.asp?pg=aflinfosheets&spg=display&articleid=240718]

The highly successful team has competed in pre-season AFL matches and is primarily based out of Darwin in the Northern Territory.

The All-Stars have rarely been defeated only once in four games in this competition format, winning against Collingwood (1999), Carlton (2003) and the Western Bulldogs (2005), but losing to Essendon in February 2007.

The team includes such champion names as Daryl White, Andrew McLeod, Byron Pickett, Chris Johnson, james mooney, Jeff Farmer and Aaron Davey and has been coached by Michael "Magic" McLean on more than one occasion.

Games featuring the All-Stars in Darwin have always attracted a large amount of interest and crowds.

In 2003, a record crowd of 17,500 attended a pre-season game in which the All-Stars defeated the Carlton Football Club at
Marrara Oval, despite James Mooney having 37 possessions and kicking 4 goals 2 behinds.
