The Kooks , despite a speech impediment developed as a child. Pritchard was born inLewisham , London and grew up inClapham , London. His father, musician Bob Pritchard, died when Luke was four years old. He attended Northcote Lodge,Bedales School , the Brit School of Performing Arts and Technology, andBrighton Institute of Modern Music , where he formed The Kooks in 2003 along with bandmates Max Rafferty,Hugh Harris , andPaul Garred . He also met his future girlfriendKatie Melua there, about whom Luke Pritchard wrote much of the Kooks' first album. The relationship was often mocked in the media, notably bySimon Amstell on Popworld. The relationship ended in 2005.Pritchard began his music career in a band called Covernote, along with his close friends Thomas Lightfoot, Brian Slade, and James Dampier and Ed Bartlett playing a number of covers and touring the local music scene of Camden, London. Luke Pritchard has said that he wants to bring music back to the pop world.
