He played his entire NFL career for the Saints and was a Pro Bowl selection in 1989. He is a member of the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame.
His most productive season came in 1989 when he rushed for 1,262 yards and scored a very impressive 18 touchdowns. He never managed this type of success again as he was plagued by injuries for the rest of his career.
Dalton Hilliard appeared on the cover of Cliff Charpentier's 1990 Fantasy Football Digest.
Hilliard is also the uncle of Ike Hilliard.
He is the father of Dalton Hilliard, Jr, who made the Louisiana All Star Team for kick returns while at Brother Martin High School.
Hilliard played college football at Louisiana State University (1982–1985). He is 5th all time in rushing touchdowns in SEC history with 44.
