- Cascadia Cup
The Cascadia Cup is a
United Soccer Leagues fan-based derby for First Division clubs based in thePacific Northwest . It was first contested in 2004, and was claimed by the Vancouver Whitecaps. The three teams who contest the cup have roots dating to the days of theNorth American Soccer League . The teams are the Portland Timbers, the Seattle Sounders, and the original champions Vancouver Whitecaps. In 2007, the
Virginia Beach Mariners folded just before the season started, leaving the USL 1st Division to scramble to fix the season schedule. The result was an unbalanced schedule, and as such it was decided to adjust the Cascadia Cup format for that season. Fans of all threeCascadia n teams agreed to make only the last home and last away matches between constituent clubs count toward the Cup.In 2008 the clubs reverted back to playing each other an equal three times each. The Cascadia Cup competition will once again include all scheduled regular season USL-1 matches played between the three rivals.
The future of the Cascadia Cup after 2008 remains in doubt. Seattle Sounders are leaving USL-1 will begin play in
Major League Soccer (MLS) as theSeattle Sounders FC in 2009. It is unknown if Portland or Vancouver will eventually join MLS as well to reunite the Cascadia clubs, although the league has been said to be considering Vancouver pending the upgrade toBC Place Stadium .2008 Fixtures & Results
