Glentworth, Lincolnshire

Glentworth, Lincolnshire

Glentworth is a village in England. It is located aprroximately 12 miles north of Lincoln and two miles from Caenby Corner. The name Glentworth comes from the Old English "glente"+"worth" or "heopa"+"hamm" for "enclosure frequented by birds of prey". The name appears in the Domesday Book as "Glentewrde" [ [http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LIN/Glentworth/ GENUKI: Glentworth, LIN ] ] .

It is home to Glentworth Hall, an Elizabethan large country house, built by Christopher Wray.

The Anglican parish church is dedicated to Saint Michael and dates from three periods, as shown by the varied masonry present in its outside walls. The oldest part is the Anglo-Saxon tower. The middle section of the present church is the product of Georgian and Victorian rebuildings. And finally the eastern end, with its distinctively rougher stonework, is largely Elizabethan. Despite numerous archeological excavations, no wells have ever been found in the village
