Ebingen is a town in the lage district of
Albstadt , districtZollernalbkreis , in the German stateBaden-Württemberg . It is located on the riverSchmiecha , a left-hand tributary of theDanube , south ofTübingen and west ofUlm .----History
Ebingen received city rights around 1250 from the
Hohenberg ducal family. In 1367 it became a part of the kingdom ofWürttemberg . In 1911, it was known for manufacturingvelvet andcotton-velvet (Manchester) goods, stockings, stays, hats, needles, tools and tanneries. In1975 Ebingen joined 8 other towns in the area to form the city ofAlbstadt . Current population is at 20,000, with all ofAlbstadt having around 45,000 inhabitants.Economy
Most of the textiles industry is gone today, leaving some monuments, like
Villa Haux . However, one of world's biggest makers of industrial needles,Groz-Beckert still resides there. Other prominent local companies includeMey (knitwear),Mettler Toledo (weighing systems) and a major part ofAssa Abloy security systems. Ebingen also hosts the technical and computer science faculties ofAlbstadt-Sigmaringen University with about 1,800 students (2006).
