The
central midfielder Shéu made his first appearance forSL Benfica during 1972, but only became a regular player in 1975. He would remain there until the end of his career asBenfica captain which began in 1986 to 1989. He won the national championship for the 1973, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1987 and 1989 seasons. He also won thePortuguese Cup in 1980, 1981, 1983, 1985, 1986 and 1987.In addition, Shéu played at the
UEFA Cup final in 1983 when Benfica lost toRSC Anderlecht 1-2 on aggregate, scoring the leading goal in the return leg inLisbon and at theUEFA Champions League final in 1988, where Benfica lost on penalties toPSV Eindhoven .After ending his football career, Shéu became a football manager, serving as assistant coach for Benfica, and still working as of 2007 with the club in directorial capacities.
International career
Shéu was capped 24 times for the Portuguese national team, scoring a goal, his debuts being a 1-3 defeat to Italy in
Turin on 7 April, 1976, in a friendly match, and his last match inBern , a 1-1 draw with Switzerland on 29 October, 1986, in the Euro 1988 qualifyings. He also played at the Euro 1984 qualifiers, but wasn't in the squad that reached third place in the finals.Honours
