- York Archaeological Trust
The York Archaeological Trust for Excavation and Research Limited is an educational charity, established in 1972 in the City of York. It carries out archaeological investigations, fieldwork, excavation and research in York, Yorkshire and throughout Britain and beyond.
It also created and now runs the Jorvik Viking Centre in Coppergate Walk, York, on the site of its famous 'Viking Dig' which revolutionised knowledge of town life in Viking Age England; in St Saviour's Church, St Saviourgate, York, and Barley Hall, an excavated and reconstructed medieval house in Coffee Yard, off Stonegate, York.
Its staff include experts in archaeological excavation, artefact curation, conservation and research, archaeological computing, illustration and design
It publishes a wide range of hard copy and web based reports, popular books and information resources; further details are available on its website.
It offers opportunities to take part in archaeological investigation through its annual training excavation 'Archaeology Live', and also hosts the Community Archaeologist for York.
