John Ravenhair, a Native American born Black-Cloud-in-Morning, was raised in
Queens, New York . As a young man, he grew ashamed of his heritage and legally changed his name. After his great-grandfather, the shaman Bison-Black-as-Midnight-Sky, dies in a mugging, the old man's spirit possesses Ravenhair, who adopts the identity of Black Bison. Black Bison sets about avenging the wrongs committed against the native American people.
