Carlos Alvarez (American football)

Carlos Alvarez is a former American football player, born in Cuba and raised in Miami after moving there with his family as a child. He was honored as an All-American in football as a sophomore at University of Florida; where majored in political science and graduated with honors in 1972.

Gator Records

Still the Gator record holder in receptions in a game (15) and season (88), although he graduated over 30 years ago. When he graduated, Alvarez had set numerous SEC and Florida pass receiving records including career, season and game pass receptions and yardage records. His career reception record of 176 was broken by Andre Caldwell against Florida Atlantic on November 17, 2007. Alvarez is also the career leader in receiving yards (2563), ranks second for season yards (1329 in 1969), and ranks second on the receiving yards charts in a game (237, Miami, 1969). His 1329 yards ranks third in SEC record books. Ranks 9th in career TD receptions, 7th in season TD receptions and is tied for 3rd for most TD receptions in a game. His 133 yard per game average in 1969 is still best at Florida and has only been exceeded once in the SEC.

Ranks second in 100-yard receiving games with 13, one behind career leader Jabar Gaffney. Also tied with Gaffney and Travis McGriff with most 100-yard receiving games in a season, all with 8. Alvarez achieved this in 1969 when 6 of those 100-yard games game consecutively, also a team record he shares with two other Gator receivers [http://www.gatorzone.com/football/media/2006/pdf/176-178.pdf] . Also led Gators in receiving stats in 1970 and 1971, marking three straight seasons as the Gator's top offensive weapon.

For his athletic achievements, Alvarez was named consensus All-America in 1969 and All-SEC as well. He was named Academic All-American in 1969, 1970 and 1971 and selected to the Academic All-American Hall of Fame in 1991.

Alvarez was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 1972 but did not play or sign a contract because of knee injuries. He went to Duke Law School on an NCAA post-graduate scholarship and he grduated summa cum laude in 1975.

Academic Awards

Carlos was an Academic All-America in 1969 and 1971 and was given an NCAA Post Graduate Scholorship Award. Subsequently he was inducted into the Academic All-America Hall of Fame. Alvarez was named to the SEC All-Academic team in 1969, 1970, and 1971.
