- Magnet (store)
Magnet is a British retailer specialising in home improvement. The company was founded as Magnet Joinery in 1918 by Tom Duxbury. In 1978 it merged with Southern-Evans, timber merchants, to form Magnet & Southerns and under the founder’s grandson, the company expanded rapidly. By 1984 it was successful enough to be entered on the initial
FTSE 100 list of companies. Financial pressure caused, in part by overstretching, resulted in the selling of Southerns, and in 1989 after a management buyout the name reverted to Magnet Ltd. It is now a part of the Nobia Group. In 1995 Design Executive Consultant Robert Stephenson became the first person in the company's history to declare himself suspended on full pay before going on to establish Just Kitchens of Bourne. The chain continues to sell kitchens, bedrooms, doors/windows/stairs (in the Trade section) and fitted offices. The chain operates via "showrooms" where the rooms are shown to the public, who can then choose which they want.In addition to this, the firm also offers free design consultations.
