Radio Volta is an
internet radio station based inWest Philadelphia ,Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in theUnited States . The station's studio is located at the LAVA Zone, and is a project of the Independent Media Center of Philadelphia. Radio Volta is financially supported by modest monthly dues paid by its programmers, as well as grants.During the
2000 Republican National Convention , the fledgling Philly IMC ran a web radio station called WR2K, which featured news produced by activists involved with the protests surrounding the convention. Shortly after the convention ended, several local radio activists, some of whom had worked previously with the West Philadelphiapirate radio station Radio Mutiny, formed Radio Volta. The founders of the station named it after American anarchistVoltairine de Cleyre , who lived in Philadelphia. The station began webcasting onNovember 7 ,2000 , also the day of the U.S. presidential election.Beginning in
2001 , Radio Voltasimulcast its signal on theFM band, under an agreement with Philadelphiacommunity radio stationWPEB (88.1 FM). This arrangement ended acrimoniously in 2003 when WPEB unilaterally chose to stop broadcasting Radio Volta's content.Radio Volta moved to its current studio in
