With three travelling exhibit every year and a Discovery Dome Theatre, TELUS World of Science offers some of the best exhibits and films in North America. Welcoming more than 304,000 visitors annually including over 54,000 students, TELUS World of Science has been a key educational hub and a tourist attraction for over 40 years. In 2006 the Creative Kids Museum opened at the TELUS World of Science, encompassing the value of art based-learning. Currently TELUS World of Science – Calgary is located in the Downtown West End ofCalgary, Alberta . In 2011, a new, world-class TELUS World of Science (New Science Centre 2011 Project ) will open north of theCalgary Zoo .History
What is known today as TELUS World of Science – Calgary originally opened as the Calgary Centennial Planetarium on July 1,
1967 . In 1983 the Calgary Science Centre Society began a bid to bring a science centre to Calgary and in 1987 they received an operating agreement that would transform theplanetarium into a the Calgary Science Centre. The Calgary Science Centre was renamed TELUS World of Science – Calgary after a $9 Million donation fromTELUS Corporation on April 27, 2005. TELUS World of Science – Calgary is a recognized hub for hosting astronomy courses, school programs, youth programs, sleepovers, birthday parties, and various spring and summer science and art camps. TELUS World of Science also welcomes three travelling exhibits per year in addition to their more permanent exhibits.
Creative Kids Museum
In 2006 the Creative Kids Museum was chosen as the City of Calgary’s celebratory project for Alberta’s Centennial. Krista Schlosser, Founding President of the Creative Kids Museum, wanted to create a place for children to expand their minds. The Creative Kids Museum is the first children’s museum in western Canada. From “Scribble Dee Dee” to “Sound and Music” this area of TELUS World of Science offers children a chance to experience all types of art and express their creativity. The Creative Kids Museum welcomes a different local artist every few weeks to engage guests and demonstrate their artistic talents.
Discovery Dome Theatre
The Discovery Dome Theatre offers a wide variety of in-house productions for school programs and at least three large format feature films each year that come to life on the giant dome screen. The Discovery Dome Theatre can also be used to simulate the nighttime sky for astronomy courses.
WOWTown
With 4000 square-feet of space, "WOWTown" is an area where children ages 3 to 7 can visit for creative playtime. Children can experience and discover "Toddler Town", "Urban Crawl", "Build a Bug", and the "Magpie’s Tree of Life".
Amazement park
The Amazement Park is a fun and interactive playground for children can play on and learn. The exhibits teach children how to be a human sundial, lift a 320kg globe, become a human bobsled, and create a musical rumble.
