SLUDGE (Scripting Language for Unhindered Development of a Gaming Environment) is a open source adventure game engine developed by Hungry Software. It combines a scripting language with other IDE tools (including a sprite bank editor and a floor region editor). Freeware and commercial adventure games can be created with the engine.

Originally shareware and then freeware, the engine and development kit are now open source as of 6th January 2008. The project is hosted on Sourceforge and can be found [http://sourceforge.net/projects/opensludge/ here] .

Capabilities

The editor and runtime engine are currently designed for Windows operating systems, but some developers have found it possible to play SLUDGE games on Intel-based Macintoshes using WINE.

SLUDGE can create games with any screen resolution (as long as the user's graphics card can handle it) and up to 16-bit colours. Version 1.6 of the SLUDGE engine introduced support for anti-aliased sprites.
